Position Summary:Obtains high quality diagnostic images of a patient's heart to identify and evaluate abnormalities and to assist with quality assurance functions of the unit. Duties include operation of a variety of cardiac ultrasound equipment, evaluation of cardiac structure and functioning, preparation of quality assurance reports, and preparation of teaching information.
Job RequirementEducation/Experience: Graduate of an accredited Ultrasound program.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:Valid registration as a Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification accepted by the American Heart Association (AHA).
Additional Position RequirementsPreferences will be given to applicants who document the following:
- Possess valid certification as a Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer
- Minimum of one (1) year of recent (within the last three (3) years), documented experience in performing transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) on adults, pediatrics and/or neonates in an acute care facility
- Minimum of one (1) year of recent (within the last three (3) years), documented experience assisting the physician and clinical staff in performing transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE) by setting up and operating ultrasound equipment in an acute care facility
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical RequirementsKnowledge of:Cardiac anatomy and physiology; principles of ultrasound physics; mechanics of heart function and action; intra cardiac pressures and velocities; congenital heart diseases; heart abnormalities and diseases; Doppler theory and applications; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage use and disposal of hazardous materials; age specific patient care practices; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.
Skill in:Operating ultrasound machines; maneuvering patients and equipment; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions; effectively in oral and written forms; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting, including stamina to stand and/or walk for an extended period of time, and strength to examine varied individuals, vision to read written material including a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
