Description
DescriptionVacancy is in the Public Works Department. Under general supervision receives records and responds to messages and inquiries received by telephone, broadcasts messages or instructions over a two-way radio to Public Works crew leaders to ensure the prompt and proper dispatch of equipment and personnel. Receives telephone calls of an emergency, non-emergency nature from the general public, answers questions or obtains information from the caller when public works services required; Monitors two (2) two-way radio circuits, broadcasting information as well as ensuring compliance with FCC broadcast regulations; Maintains logs of all complaints, compiling records as to the disposition of work crews and calls for service; Relays orders and instructions to crew leaders advising them to dispatch personnel and equipment at work locations; Regularly inventories departmental radio equipment and arranges for its preventive maintenance; Monitors a national weather service teletype machine and advises officials of severe weather conditions; Reports hazardous road and utility conditions to the proper authorities; During winter storms, inspects and dispatches snow removal equipment to routes; and records all man-hours expended for city-wide snow removal operations.

This is a 1716 union position. The hours of this position are 40 per week. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesThe examination will consist of a rating of your training and experience as contained on your application and will include a combination of either a written, oral, or performance test. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination is designed to measure:
Knowledge of: - Geography of the City.
- Operating principles of radio-telephone transmitting and receiving equipment.
Ability to: - Obtain accurate and complete information from persons under both routine and emergent conditions.
- Deal tactfully with the general public and to exercise sound judgment.
- Express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
Qualifications Open to all qualified applicants who meet the following qualifications: Graduation from a standard high school, vocational school, or its equivalent
AND two (2) years experience in various Public Works activities including some clerical work.
If selected, you will be required to pass a physical examination administered by a City physician, a drug and alcohol screening, and a background check. If appointed, you will serve 3-12 months of probation. This examination and employment process is subject to all federal, state, and municipal laws, rules and regulations.
