This communications position works with a variety of City departments as well as state, county, regional, and non-profit agencies to quickly disseminate accurate information during emergency situations. Additionally, this position focuses on developing and providing proactive education and outreach regarding emergency preparedness during non-emergency days. Key responsibilities include marketing, public relations, media relations, and publication of documents for internal and external audiences.

Job Description:

Purpose:

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the dissemination of news and information to the general public, City employees, and the media regarding departmental and/or Citywide programs. These duties may contribute to any or all of the following areas: marketing, public relations, media relations, and publication of documents for internal and external education and communication.

Austin Emergency Management (AEM) plans and prepares for emergencies, educates the public about preparedness, develops volunteers, manages grant funding to improve homeland security and public safety capabilities, coordinates emergency response and recovery, supports planned events, and works with public and partner organizations to protect our whole community when it needs us the most.

Background Investigation

Compensation:

$32.96 - $41.20/hour

Assessment:

An assessment may be included as a part of this recruitment process.

Hours:

Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Hours will vary based on operational needs.

This position is considered essential and will be required to report to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), as directed in advance, or in response to an emergency, and may include nights (overnights), weekends, holidays, etc.

Work Location:

5010 Old Manor Road

Travel:

If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.
