Position Summary

Position Summary:
Monitors the heart patterns of patients and report lethal arrhythmic to a supervisor immediately. Duties include monitoring and recording cardiac activity data from an electrocardiographic monitor and clerical support responsibilities related to department and patient services.

Job Requirement

Education/Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Valid certification of completion for basic arrhythmia course or one (1) year experience as a monitor technician. 6 months of experience as a Unit Clerk preferred.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Valid certification of completion for basic arrhythmia course is required with less than one year of monitor technician experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements

Knowledge of:
Medical terminology; office practices and principles; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials; infection control policies and practices; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures; age specific patient care practices.

Skill in:
Reading and interpreting electrocardiographic arrhythmias and pacemaker rhythms; use of computer and a variety of software applications, using general office equipment such as phones, copiers, facsimiles, etc.; performing detailed office support duties, business arithmetic; communicating effectively with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, stamina to remain seated for extended periods of time and maintains concentration, vision to read printed materials and VDT screens, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or an eligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
