Under general supervision of the Director of Community Development and Chief Planning Manager, performs professional current and long-range planning duties in addition to performing GIS analysis and data management duties.

This position is allocated to the Community Development Department but works with a variety of City Departments, regional stakeholders, and agencies. Incumbents perform work of a technical nature, utilizing skills that require a thorough understanding of technical geographic information systems procedures and processes, as well as current and long-range planning.

This is an advanced journey-level class responsible for performing a broad range of GIS and mapping-related activities and professional planning responsibilities. The duties performed require considerable discretion and latitude of judgment, and as such, incumbents may exercise lead direction to Departmental and other City staff on GIS and mapping-related activities, special projects, and planning projects.

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain required qualification would be:

At least a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university in cartography, planning, environmental science, geography, GIS, or a related field, and two (2) years of professional government or private sector experience in GIS, with at least one (1) year at the analyst level.

A master’s degree in one of these fields or a related field and/or GISP certification from the GIS Certification Institute is desirable and may be substituted for one year of experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to provide the applicant with the knowledge, skills and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the job will be considered.

Language Skills:

English (read, write, and the use of proper grammar).

Necessary Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

An eligibility list will be established by ranking candidates by their overall score and a selection will be made from the candidates on this list. All employment offers are subject to a City-paid physical examination and a thorough reference and background check.

$95,033.52 - $115,513.80 Annually
