PLANT MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

The City of Olathe’s Environmental Services Division wants YOU to join our team of talented and dedicated employees that provide critical water related services to the City of Olathe residents. In 2023, our award-winning water production facility treated 5 billion gallons of drinking water for an average daily demand of over 13 million gallons per day while our two NACWA Gold award winning wastewater treatment plants treated a combined average of 6.4 million gallons per day. Our Plant Maintenance group works to make sure our Drinking Water Production, Wastewater Treatment, and Environmental Lab are fully functioning so that we consistently meet or exceed all federal and state regulations while delivering exceptional services to City of Olathe residents.

As a Seasonal Plant Maintenance Technician, you’ll play a key role in supporting the City’s Water Plant, Wastewater Plants, and Environmental Lab by maintaining essential infrastructure, ensuring operational efficiency, and upholding quality and safety standards. Plant Maintenance Technician I: One year or more of experience in a related field such as HVAC technician, plumber, electrician, or mechanical maintenance is preferred. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Specialized courses in a related field are preferred. A valid driver’s license and favorable driving record are required. A Class I Plant Maintenance Technologist certification is required within 24 months of employment. Pay Range: $21.75 to $26.51/hour depending on experience.

Work Schedule:
7:00 AM to 3:30 PM M-F.

The Plant Maintenance Technician I employs entry-level mechanical skills to maintain and repair industrial equipment and facilities essential for drinking water production, wastewater treatment and related infrastructure. Committed to working safely, they execute scheduled preventive maintenance across operations applying attention to detail to identify and report potential maintenance issues. Under the supervision of experienced team members, they troubleshoot and repair increasingly complex systems.

Qualifications

Experience: One year or more of experience in a related field such as HVAC technician, plumber, electrician, or mechanical maintenance is preferred.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Specialized courses in a related field are preferred. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education.

Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A Class I Plant Maintenance Technologist certification is preferred.

Environmental or Physical Demands: Plant Maintenance Technicians perform their job duties in both indoor and outdoor environments. They will be exposed to all types of conditions including sun, wind, rain, snow, ice, pollen, dust, fumes, sanitary waste, and other allergens or airborne particles. They work in confined spaces and trenches. They are exposed to noise from traffic and equipment. They must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of one’s arms and legs moving one’s whole body to lift, balance, walk, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl while handling or carrying materials. Some tasks are performed where the ground is uneven and/or water soaked. They operate a variety of hand and power tools, powered equipment, and commercial vehicles. They may drive or ride from site-to-site multiple times throughout the workday. Job functions in and around excavations, confined spaces, mechanized equipment, roadways, and bodies of water present the need for alertness and safety awareness. The work requires the ability to see, hear, and smell in order to detect problems and ensure the safety of employees and others in response to exposure to the hazards associated with this position.
