Scaler (Ropes Access Technician)
Description
Duties Description The Scaler (Ropes Access Technician) will be responsible for conducting technical ropes access operations in accordance with safety regulations and team procedures. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
• Performing rock scaling and stabilization work, including hazard mitigation along cliffs, gorges, and trails.
• Conducting inspections, maintenance, and repairs on infrastructure such as bridges, walls, and overlooks using rope access techniques.
• Removing loose rock, trees, and other hazards to ensure public safety.
• Assisting in environmental and conservation projects, such as invasive species removal and habitat restorations that require ropes access.
• Rigging and operating fall protection and ropes access systems safely and efficiently.
• Conducting pre-job safety assessments, equipment inspections, and job hazard analyses.
• Participating in emergency response and rescue operations as needed.
• Transporting and maintaining tools, materials, and safety equipment necessary for rope access work.
• This position involves the ability to work in extreme outdoor conditions, including steep terrain, variable weather, and remote locations.
• Lifting and carrying heavy equipment and working for extended periods at height.
• Adhering to all NYS Parks safety standards and policies.
Minimum Qualifications Must be able to descend vertical surfaces while wearing a harness and carrying equipment; and have six months experience working at great heights.
Additional Comments PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• A high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma
• Two years of experience in industrial rope access, rock scaling, or related fields such as tree work, bridge maintenance, or structural inspections utilizing rope access techniques.
OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess or obtain a SPRAT (Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians) Level 1 or higher certification and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
• Must participate in and pass all skill maneuvers at the NYS Parks Rope Access Academy.
• Must obtain medical clearance (physical) and pass the department’s physical fitness exam as a condition of employment.
• Must possess and maintain First Aid/CPR/AED certifications.
• Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
