SENIOR ENGINEERING AIDE - LAND SURVEY - FIELD
Description
The PositionThe City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of
Senior Engineering Aide to fill one (1) vacancy in
City Land Surveying, Public Works Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.
The ideal candidate will have field land surveying experience, such as performing construction staking and field topographical surveys, along with experience researching and preparing for all types of land surveying fieldwork. The candidate should be focused on pursuing a career in land surveying and interested in acquiring their Land Surveyor in Training Certificate. The ideal candidate should be willing to learn, have excellent communication skills, and deliver outstanding customer service.
The Senior Engineering Aide performs semi-professional office and field survey work. Drafts engineering documents, provides field surveys, construction staking, topographical surveys, and control surveys.
Work PerformedTypical duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Depending on area of assignment, perform and deliver a wide range of customer and engineering services and aide for the City and its Engineers and Engineering Technicians; perform extensive design and drafting services for multiple projects; research materials, equipment, and supplies for projects and compiles all data.
- Create, design, and draft base map for infrastructure upgrades; use and operates various computer equipment, software, and hardware to create competent designs and make modifications to existing designs.
- Perform field survey and measurement work to ensure accuracy in drawings and calculations; gather, compile, and organize various measurements for locations of vaults, manholes, transformers, etc. for future engineering designs and construction plans; provide field survey work for traffic control, public utilities, parks and recreation, wastewater t, electrical applications, and any other required work.
- Consult with contract administrators, field crews, and contractors to complete required drawings and designs; attend consistent meetings and engage with other Engineering staff to ensure work is being done accurately and effectively.
- Plot and issue drawings to be given to construction crews and inspection crews; coordinate work and ensure all parties involved have access to drawings and sketches; edit, review, and update documents and drawings as needed; perform detailed and more complex work depending on assignment and project needs.
- Calculate and determine the quantity of materials being used in a project for central stores to accommodate the project needs; determine necessary equipment, develop cost estimates, and calculated usage to ensure facilities are not over extended or overworked.
- Respond to emails, calls, and general questions and inquiries from a variety of customers and construction personnel; define and communicates standards relating to engineering.
- Process, submit, and track engineering paperwork for the department and the City; provide technical support for engineering related tasks; perform work in changing areas of assignment.
- Train, assist, and support other lower level staff and department personnel; provide education and guidance for various developed and implemented programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation and Experience: Education: High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED).
Experience: Three years of field land surveying work. An Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, mathematics, AutoCAD, drafting or a related field may substitute for one year of the required experience.
Necessary Special Requirements:Licenses and Certifications: Possession of an appropriate, valid class “C” California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
Assignment may require incumbent to obtain additional certifications during employment.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Work is done in a standard office environment and in the field with exposure to construction materials, hazards, chemicals, and other adverse conditions. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

- Retirement for Classic Members -For employees hired after 1/1/2013 who are CLASSIC MEMBERS of California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12 and have not been separated from service from such agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2.7 % @ age 55; 3 year final compensation.The required employee contribution is 8%. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
- Retirement for New Members - For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who ARE NOT a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% at age 62; 3 year final compensation.The required employee contribution is 50% of the normal cost and is subject to change per CalPERS every fiscal year. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
- Health Insurance - The City offerssix health insurance plans and contributes up to $1,469 per month for employee and dependent coverage.
- Dental Insurance - The City provides three dental insurance plans and contributes up to $45 per month.
- Vision Insurance - The City provides vision coverage through Vision Service Plan (VSP) for employees and their dependents that are enrolled in medical coverage.
- Life Insurance - The City provides and pays for term life insuranceequal to $100,000. Additional Life Insurance is available and voluntary for employee and eligible dependents (up to $300k).
- Deferred Compensation - The City contributes $25 a month with a minimum employee contribution of $12.50 per check. Participation in the deferred compensation plan is optional.
- Leave Benefits - Includes vacation leave, sick leave, bereavement leave, and holiday benefits.
- Flexible Spending Account - The City offers a Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Plan for optional participation.
