Description
The PositionThe City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of
Computer Technician* to fill one (1) vacancy in the
Neighborhood Services Division of the
Library Department . The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.
The Library Technician performs a wide variety of complex, technical, and advanced clerical library support duties relating to circulation, reference, cataloguing, and acquisitions. Incumbents perform a wide variety of duties associated with providing library service to the general public and may be assigned to specialized areas as necessary.
Work PerformedDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Participate in and perform typical circulation and reference duties; assists, supports, and engages with customers at a public service desk; problem solve item records and patron accounts.
- Assist with the implementation, maintenance, and management of the library's integrated library system and auxiliary technology tools; work closely with the analysts and branch management to maintain the integrity of the library's computer and cloud-based systems.
- Assist with service to customers by answering information questions, giving directions and making referrals to professional staff; help patrons in locating materials, reserving materials, securing holds, and basic use of library equipment and computers; answer telephone inquiries and issue new and replacement library cards.
- Explain library policies and regulations and respond to customer infractions according to department policy; collect overdue fines and fees.
- Schedules and coordinates library schedule to ensure coverage and appropriate staffing; monitors events and participates in general technical and clerical tasks surrounding library programming.
- Pack and unpack book bins for delivery between libraries; locate and process customer requested holds; perform miscellaneous problem solving, search for missing items, writing basic memos, processing mail, ordering supplies, mending books, and shelving materials; assist in cataloguing and processing of new materials.
- Participate in the promotion of the library services through public relations, publicity, endorsement of library events, marketing, community awareness drives, fundraising, and other activities; acquires grants and other sources of funding; provides marketing and graphic design work.
- Design, conduct and assist in a variety of instructional classes in the use of library technology and resources for children, teens, and adults; assist in the preparation of reading lists and bibliographies; prepare bulletin board displays.
- Maintain various files and records; prepare reports on circulation, registration, book stock, and collection of fines; compile statistics and data, tally daily cash receipts, and prepare cash reports.
- Demonstrate strong customer service skills and the ability to work with diverse groups.
- Lead, train, and provide guidance to other Library staff when required.
- Must be able to work irregular schedules including evenings and weekends.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation: Associate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Library Technology, Computer Science, Social Sciences, Humanities, or Liberal Arts.
Experience: One (1) year of increasingly responsible library clerical or technology assistant experience.
Necessary Special Requirements:- Must be able to work irregular schedules including evenings and weekends.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid appropriate Class “C” California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
Highly Desired Qualifications:- Experience in a technical capacity performing computer related support activities.
- Experience implementing or assisting with new technology projects
- Experience deploying and managing computer systems
- A+ Certification

Service Employees International Union (SEIU) - General Unit The City offers an attractive benefits package, the central provisions of which are as follows:
- Retirement for Classic Members - For employees hired after 1/1/2013 who are CLASSIC MEMBERS of California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12 and have not been separated from service from such agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2.7 % @ age 55; 3 year final compensation. The required employee contribution is 8%. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
- Retirement for New Members - For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who ARE NOT a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% at age 62; 3 year final compensation. The required employee contribution is 50% of the normal cost and is subject to change per CalPERS every fiscal year. The City does not participate in Social Security; thus, employees do not bear this additional 6.2% expense.
- Health Insurance - The City offers six health insurance plans and contributes up to $1,469 per month for employee and dependent coverage.
- Dental Insurance - The City provides three dental insurance plans and contributes up to $45 per month.
- Vision Insurance - The City provides vision coverage through Vision Service Plan (VSP) for employees and their dependents that are enrolled in medical coverage.
- Life Insurance - The City provides and pays for term life insurance equal to $100,000. Additional Life Insurance is available and voluntary for employee and eligible dependents (up to $300k).
- Deferred Compensation - The City contributes $25 a month with a minimum employee contribution of $12.50 per check. Participation in the deferred compensation plan is optional.
- Leave Benefits - Includes vacation leave, sick leave, bereavement leave, and holiday benefits.
- Flexible Spending Account - The City offers a Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Plan for optional participation.
- State Disability Insurance - Automatic coverage administered by the Employee Development Department (EDD) of the State of California
- Vacation Accrual - 0-4 yrs. = 80hrs, 5-9 yrs. = 120hrs, 10+ yrs. = 160 hrs.
