Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:

Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.

Experience: Wastewater Technician II- Three (3) years of experience in public works maintenance and construction work or one year as a City of Laguna Beach Wastewater Utility Worker II. Experience in the repair of municipal sewer system experience is highly desirable.

License/Certificate Requirements:

Due to the performance of field duties that may include the operation of both City commercial and non-commercial vehicles, an applicant must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License and an acceptable driving record at time of hire. A CWEA Electrical & Instrumentation Technologist (EIT) and/or a CWEA Mechanical Technologist (MT) are highly desirable.

Positions in this series may receive calls for emergency service and may be required to respond during non-scheduled work hours, including evenings, holidays, and weekends .

DOT Compliance

In compliance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and the City's policy on random testing for controlled substances and alcohol for commercially licensed drivers, candidates for this position who are commercially licensed are required to pass a drug test prior to placement in the position. All employees working in this position, who are subject to maintaining a commercial driver's license for the performance of duties, will be enrolled as participants in the City's Random Testing Program for Controlled Substances and Alcohol.

This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies in the same or lower classifications.

The selection process may be modified based on the needs of the City.

Pre-employment Process: Selected candidates must successfully pass a fingerprint check with the State Department of Justice, and a pre-placement physical including a drug test. Education and employment verification and reference check(s) will also be conducted .

Physical, Mental and Environmental Working Conditions:

Work is performed in various environmental conditions, with exposure to outdoor temperature and weather variations, traffic and equipment noise, vibrations, fumes, grease, machinery and moving parts, odors, dust, chemicals such as cleaning solvents, and raw sewage. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, or more than 50 pounds, with assistance; sit, stand, squat, kneel, climb stairs, stoop, and walk for prolonged periods; and get from one location to another in the course of doing business. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading work-related documents and using the computer, and acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. An employee generally works outdoors. The employee will travel to different locations and be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, or potentially hazardous chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high, and the employee may occasionally be exposed to loud talking and interruptions from telephones and/or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.
