Rate of pay depends on qualifications.Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARYThe Senior Welder uses extensive knowledge of welding techniques for providing fabrication, modification, design, welding, cutting and repairs of metal equipment. This position welds and repairs safety implements of equipment and makes necessary field service calls for projects and occasionally for emergency service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Leading team to plan and execute welding projects that may take several weeks to complete.
- Performs preventive inspections as well as ensures accurate diagnosis and effective repair and/or replacement.
- Performs a variety of journey level fabrication and repair welding on mechanized equipment, structures, buildings, or heavy equipment.
- Inspecting welds to ensure they meet industry standards for quality.
- Applies shielded metal arc and inert gas welding processes in compliance with the American Welding Society and American Society of Mechanical Engineers Welding Codes.
- Operates portable welding rig for field repairs and service work to equipment, industrial plants, or infield repairs.
- Provides assistance, guidance and direction to lower-level personnel.
- Ensures compliance with technical drawings, plans and material specifications.
- Maintains welding supplies inventory to ensure necessary supplies are available when needed; tracks, organizes, and monitors equipment and supply use; identifies needs, makes purchasing recommendation
- Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with SAWS / OSHA Standards.
- Performs other duties assigned.
DECISION MAKING- This position works under general supervision and takes individual initiative to plan and perform work daily and weeks at a time.
- This position serves as a lead, training entry level employees on assigned daily work.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Five years of shop and industrial field service work in welding, fabrication, fitting and cutting including Gas Metal Arc welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Inert Gas (GTAW) welding, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) to accomplish welding on all types of metals such as aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, pipe and steel.
- Valid class “C” Texas Driver’s License.
- Valid 6G certification (American Welding Society).
- Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Vocational school in welding, fabrication and fitting.
- CWI (Certified Welding Inspector).
- Confined Space Welding training.
- Proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheets and database.
JOB DIMENSIONS- Ability to establish and maintain contact with internal and external customers, contractors, vendors and regulatory agencies.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONSPhysical requirements include lifting up to 75 pounds. Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform job scope. Requires visual acuity.
Working conditions are primarily in a shop/outside with frequent exposure to inclement weather; wastewater; mechanical, electrical, chemical and confined space hazards; offensive fumes; excessive noise; heavy traffic; deep excavations and animals, snakes and poisonous insects. Required to comply with requirements as specified in applicable regulations for personal protective equipment, including clearance for use of respiratory protection and other associated equipment. May operate a company vehicle or equipment on a daily basis.
May be required to work other than regular daytime schedule such as overtime, nights, weekends, shift work, rotating shifts, emergency response and on-call.
