POSITION INFORMATION

Placer County is currently accepting applications for Equipment Operator. in both Tahoe and Auburn. Each location has different vacancies and requires a separate application and supplemental questionnaire.

Equipment Operator Tahoe: 2024-11502-01

Equipment Operator Auburn: 2024-11502-02

This recruitment is for the Auburn location which has four (4) extra help/seasonal vacancies.

DEFINITION

To operate light and moderately heavy road maintenance and construction equipment in the repair, maintenance and construction of County roads.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the full journey level class within the Equipment Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the entry level.

This class is distinguished from the Senior Equipment Operator in that the latter operates a variety of heavy equipment requiring a high level of skill, performs complex road maintenance and construction activities requiring a high degree of independent judgment and may exercise technical and functional supervision over maintenance and technical personnel as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Road District Supervisor and may receive technical and functional supervision from other maintenance or technical personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Training

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two years of responsible experience performing duties similar to those of a Maintenance Worker assigned to various program areas in Placer County.

Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Required License or Certificate:

Possession of, or ability to obtain within six-months, a valid Class B driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements. Hazardous materials endorsement may be required depending upon the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Training & Experience Rating (100%)

Based upon responses to the supplemental questionnaire, the applicant’s education, training, and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

Prior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination (which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation), sign a constitutional oath, and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S. For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation (which may include a voice stress analysis and/or a polygraph), and/or be bonded. Additionally, positions in law enforcement classifications and those supporting law enforcement functions will be required to complete a conviction history questionnaire prior to or during the interview process. Applicants for positions with access to Medi-Cal billing software or who are licensed providers must clear the Federal Exclusion List, credentialing, and social security verification. Failure to clear these requirements may result in an employment offer being withdrawn.

Specific position(s) within this classification designated as Safety Sensitive may require applicants to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse and to provide consent for Placer County to conduct a full query of their records within the Clearinghouse prior to an offer of employment.

Placer County offers an expedited process for qualifying certain applicants for interviews.
