ABOUT THE POSITION

The Community Navigator performs a variety of technical and professional duties to support the safety, well-being, and success of youth and their families. Performs various assessments, behavioral intervention techniques, referral and service linkage, prevention services and education to youth and their families participating in the Truancy Prevention Outreach Program.

Please Note: Part-time employment will not lead to permanent employment. Part-time hourly employees are used to fill positions normally less than twenty (20) hours per week. Part-time employees do not receive benefits.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from high school AND one (1) year of full-time experience working with and caring for youth, OR college-level course work in Criminal Justice, Child Development, Psychology, Social Work, Education, related behavioral science, or degree related to the work may be substituted for the experience on a year-for-year basis.

Licensing and Certification:
Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver's License.

Background Investigation:
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted. Must not have any qualifying offense that violates the standards required by NRS 62B.223 and/or NRS 62G.223..

Minimum Age: Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at time of appointment.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing:
Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

Working Conditions:
Work shifts may include day, swing shift, grave shift, and weekends (including Holidays).

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.

Assists youth in developing skills in the areas of academic-personal-social growth, educational planning, and career and vocational development. Provides direct case management services to youth and families. Completes screenings in order to identify the underlying causes of chronic absences and/or truancy. Meets with students and parents to discuss attendance issues. Visits assigned schools and conducts home visits as assigned. Performs other tasks related to the position, as assigned.
Interviews youth and parents to obtain pertinent information; contacts schools, provides program and procedural information; completes forms and documents and writes reports.

Establishes and maintains working relationships with The Clark County School District, The Harbor Juvenile Assessment Centers and community providers to facilitate services for youth and their families.

Answers telephone calls to provide information; documents notes and makes appropriate referrals. Receives, interviews and assesses immediate needs; makes intake determinations and processes intakes; contacts families, schools, and community providers. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the program's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team. Performs various office and administrative support duties, including the operation of standard office equipment. May drive a motor vehicle to transport youth and families to appointments and other facilities. May perform light custodial duties.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mobility to work in various settings; drive a motor vehicle to transport youth and their families as needed; stamina to stand and/or walk for an extended period of time; ability to use standard office equipment and read printed materials including a computer screen; the ability to communicate in person and/or over the telephone.
