Senior Fire Hazard Abatement Officer to support wildfire prevention across the county’s diverse and high-risk landscapes. This position plays a critical role in addressing the growing threats of wildfire, climate change, and pest infestation by developing vegetation management strategies that promote both public safety and environmental health.
Key Responsibilities may include:- Enforce Fire Safety Ordinances: Conduct property inspections to ensure compliance with fire hazard abatement and hazardous tree regulations. Issue notices and work directly with property owners to mitigate risks.
- Lead Public Education Efforts: Coordinate community outreach and education campaigns focused on defensible space and proper vegetation maintenance to promote fire safety awareness.
- Complex Cases: Conducts complex, sensitive, or high-profile inspections and investigations.
- Compliance and Enforcement Programs: Lead fire hazard abatement programs, field inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities to ensure adherence to fire codes, ordinances, regulations, and County policies.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprinting and a medical exam.
License: Travel throughout the County is required. A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained.
Work Hours: May occasionally require working overtime, weekends, and/or holidays.
Physical: Incumbents frequently bend, stoop, kneel, work on rough and uneven terrain, and are subject to extreme climates.
Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is unable to consider candidates who require Visa Sponsorship at this time or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States.
Minimum Requirements EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of experience in fire hazard abatement, vegetation management/arboriculture, wildfire prevention, or fire and environmental safety. Experience must include enforcing fire hazards or safety regulations, and conducting inspections.
Substitution: An associate's degree from an accredited college or university in fire science/technology, forestry, natural resource management, conservation, inspection/construction technology or a closely related field -OR- certifications in Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190, S-290), Fire Fighter Type 1 Training, or NFPA Wildfire Mitigation Specialist may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
Desired QualificationsThe ideal candidate will possess:
- Knowledge of wildfire behavior, vegetation types, and ecological principles.
- Experience interpreting and enforcing fire codes or related ordinances.
- Experience working in a public agency enforcing rules and regulations, reading Assessor Parcel Maps and using mapping applications.
- Strong leadership, communication, and public outreach skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with agencies, landowners, and community members.
- Familiarity with local and state fire prevention strategies and environmental regulations.

- CAL FIRE Defensible Space Inspector Training Certificate
- Wildland Fire Behavior S-190 and S-290
