DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Inspect various civil construction sites to ensure compliance with technical specification and contract documents. Prepare and record daily construction activity reports with photos encompassing mechanical, electrical, and piping project details. List specific details on plan modifications, contractor work progress, equipment usage, and laboratory activities. Calculate project material usage in accordance with project specification. Verify project materials, data, and equipment which correlate with approved submittals and project specification. Prepare and submit technical test reports and pay estimates with invoices. Review project change orders and request for information. Attend construction progress meetings and on-site field observations/inspection walkthroughs. Investigate and respond to inquiries from City of Houston departments, consultants, agencies, contractors, civic groups and the general public.
WORKING CONDITIONS The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods standing, walking, and include whatever means necessary to climb stairs and the ability to perform and negotiate field hazards on a routine basis. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness, and unpleasant air conditions. This position may involve exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.
This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier II Level.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Four (4) years of skilled experience related to construction are required.
Substitution: A Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or a related field may substitute for up to four years of the experience requirement. Vocational training and education may be substituted on a year for-year basis for up to four years of the experience requirement.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Requires a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
PREFERENCESPreference will be given to applicants with experience in construction and inspection. Moderate communication skills, both orally and in writing, problem-solving attitude, and computer skills will be preferred.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**GENERAL INFORMATION SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED: None However, the department may administer a skills assessment test.
