Position Description

The City of Tacoma Municipal Court is seeking a Court Support Services Unit Manager. This classification provides professional services for misdemeanant offenders for Tacoma Municipal Court in the areas of case management, intervention services, drug testing and sentencing alternatives. In addition, this classification interacts with probationers referred by the courts to various programs and services including monitored probation, alternative detention, and court monitoring. An incumbent receives direction from the Court Administrator and the Presiding Judge.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Individual Contributor: Assignment with regular interaction with senior department leadership as the department or city-wide designated/recognized and approved subject-matter expert for a unique function that requires significant expe r tise: typically is an industry-recognized expert by external groups such as indust r y groups, professional associations, educational institutions and possesses unique licenses or certif ications others in the class do not possess; has delegated decision-making authority and management defers to this position for decision in area of expertise. May also in clude supervision of less than two (2) professional-level employees, leading other employees, or intermittent, project-based supervision . Focus of assignment is extensive and broad knowledge and skill within a p a rticular field o r function . Work involves assisting with policy development, leading high impact/high dollar projects, making operational and strategic recommendations, managing enterprise activities, and /or performing highly tec hnical work with a high degree of impact and political risk.

Management Track: First level of supervisory authority overseeing a formally designated unit of two (2) or more professional-level positions. Time is spent in work unit management including all of the following: budget management; directing, planning and coordinating assignments/projects; monitoring work quality; counseling employees; resolving issues and grievances; conducting performance evaluations and providing recommendations for hiring, terminations, discipline, salary actions.

Responsibilities Include:

Qualifications

Minimum Education
Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Criminal Justice or Social Work required

Minimum Experience
4 years' experience in probation, criminal justice, social work or a related field that includes caseload management or criminal law

Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
Must successfully pass criminal background check
Must join the Misdemeanant Probation Association (MPA) within 45 days of employment
Must successfully complete the Misdemeanant Probation Counselor’s Academy within six (6) months of employment as required by WAC 139-10-210
Maintain continuing education credits, a minimum of eight (8) credits per year (Employer provided)
As necessary, may require Washington State Driver's License

Hourly Rate: $58.70 - $82.67
Annual Rate: $122,096.00 - $171,953.60

Other Employment Information

Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
