Job Description:

IT Enterprise Architect

Purpose:

This position proactively and holistically guides the City through transformation and optimization initiatives, and serves as a leader in applying existing, new, and emerging technologies to transform and optimize the business and operating model of the organization. IT Enterprise Architects lead the Enterprise Architecture practice and its initiations to enable the City to better respond to department needs and the changing environment.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

Provides overall direction, guidance, and definition of technology architecture to effectively support business strategy. Develops the enterprise viewpoint, in which the business, information and technology viewpoints are synthesized into solutions that deliver capabilities to the broader City. Develops, reviews, and leads the implementation plan for the enterprise architecture based on requirements and strategies. Reviews existing processes and establishes metrics to improve processes, as well as support of all architectural disciplines under their direction. Leads analysis of technology industry and market trends to determine their potential impact on the enterprise architecture. Ensures the integration of all aspects of architecture across the City IT organization and alignment with business strategies, objectives, and capability needs. Leads the development of holistic blueprints in coordination with domain architects. Participates in the business strategic planning cycle, gaining an understanding of common issues, drivers, imperatives, and objectives across the enterprise. Coordinates with other plans and strategic partners, identifying opportunities for shared solutions. Provides architectural leadership, guidance, and support for the broader architectural community.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Austin Watershed Protection is hiring an IT Enterprise Architect to provide enterprise-level architectural leadership for technologies that support flood risk management, field operations, and core business systems. This role develops and maintains current-state and target-state architecture artifacts, including diagrams and documentation that clearly describe integrations, data flows, dependencies, and security controls across operational technology, infrastructure, and data platforms. The Enterprise Architect partners across teams and departments to evaluate options, assess risk and feasibility, and guide solution designs that align with City enterprise strategy, security requirements, and operational reliability expectations. The position also supports cloud migration and modernization efforts, with an emphasis on improving scalability, resilience, and long-term maintainability, including work involving Azure SQL and related cloud services. Success depends on collaborative leadership, clear communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and disciplined architectural judgment as priorities and projects evolve.

Salary Range:
$50.14 - $67.64, depending on qualifications and experience.

Days and Hours:
40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, with the ability for a 60% telework schedule per week after the initial training period. Exceptions may apply, subject to the department's business needs.

EDUCATION:

TRAVEL:
If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.
