The Port is currently recruiting for the position of Custodian. Under general supervision, incumbents are assigned to areas to perform a variety of routine and heavy cleaning tasks. Incumbents are expected to do heavy manual work and work unusual hours. In a few cases, incumbents may be required to maintain a building's security by locking doors, preventing vandalism, and reporting "unusual" events to police or management. Incumbents assigned to the airport may assist patrons in a variety of ways including giving directions. There is little consequence of error on the job. Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

This examination is open to persons who have a combination of education and experience that would reflect possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. A typical combination would include the following:

License: Must possess a valid California Class C Driver License at the time and for the duration of appointment.

Education: Graduation from a high school or its equivalent.

Experience: One year of experience performing custodial work at a heavy traffic facility with high interface with the public

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of common cleaning tools such as mops, brooms, vacuums, scouring devices, wax applicators, outdoor sweepers, power floor waxers and polishers, etc.; proper handling of cleaning chemicals and materials; safety practices and procedures in handling cleaning chemicals and equipment.

Ability to operate large ride-on cleaning equipment, etc.; follow oral and written instructions; perform routine repetitive tasks on a continuous basis; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties and to work as a team; work under deadlines and coordinate several concurrent assignments; work with minimum supervision.

THE SELECTION PROCESS

Stage I: Application and Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation (Pass/Fail) - The first stage in the selection process will consist of an application and supplemental questionnaire, appraisal review (pass/fail). Applications submitted without a completed supplemental questionnaire will not be given further consideration. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement to the next stage. Only the most suitably qualified candidates will be invited to Stage II.

Stage II: Written Examination (Pass/Fail) - The second stage of the selection process will consist of a written examination designed to assess basic knowledge of custodial work.

Stage III: Performance Examination (Weighted 100%) - The third stage of the selection process will consist of a combination of job-related situational project exercises designed to assess technical knowledge and any additional KSAs.

Candidates must achieve a scale score of 70 or more on this examination to be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration . The Port reserves the right to modify the selection process, as necessary, to conform to administrative or business necessity.

Additional Requirements

The Port of Oakland requires each incumbent to successfully complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check, which will include a fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) and a Security Threat Assessment (STA), prior to being considered for this position. In addition, the incumbent will also be required to complete and pass a U.S. Customs Airport Security Program Check (19CFR122.182). This status must be maintained for the duration of employment.

In addition, candidates must be willing to perform shift work on a 24-hour basis including weekends and holidays and must be willing to wear a uniform and to work under adverse or hazardous conditions.
